Mill Steel Co. in Grand Rapids Acquires Maryland Metals Processing - DBusiness Magazine

Mill Steel Co. in Grand Rapids, one of the nation’s largest distributors of flat-rolled carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, has acquired Maryland Metals Processing (MMP) in Baltimore, a stainless and aluminum toll processor. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Aluminum toll processing is a manufacturing service that involves a company converting raw materials or semi-finished aluminum into a finished product for a customer. Toll processing can be cost-effective and efficient for businesses that don’t have the equipment to process aluminum.

MMP provides cut to length, polishing, slitting, and coil enhancement services. The transaction strengthens Mill Steel’s national footprint and processing capabilities, according to the company.

“We are excited to bring Maryland Metals Processing into the Mill Steel family,” says Pam Heglund, CEO of Mill Steel. “The facility is strategically located to further enhance our shipping and processing capabilities across the country and beyond. Most importantly, we are committed to preserving the outstanding service, relationships, and quality that Maryland Metals’ customers have come to trust.”

Heglund says Mill Steel recognizes MMP’s “reputation for providing an exceptional toll processing experience.” Mill Steel says it will take a hands-off approach to ensure MMP continues to operate independently — retaining its name, business model, and all associates — while adding further toll processing capacity to the facility.

“Joining forces with Mill Steel is a tremendous opportunity for us,” says Ken McAvoy, CEO of MMP. “Our customers can expect the same high standard of service from the same dedicated team, while benefiting from Mill Steel’s expanded resources and national reach. We look forward to continuing to meet our customers’ needs with the excellence they’ve always relied on.”

Mill Steel Co. was founded in 1959 by Harry Samrick and is one of North America’s largest steel and aluminum suppliers. The company is third generation family owned and nationally certified as a Women Owned Business Enterprise. It operates seven production facilities nationwide.
